Stretching from temperate
Europe across forests and mountains to the
Arctic Siberian wastes and the Pacific,
Russia is the largest country in Europe.
It has a long and often troubled history,
but as well as its huge natural resources
the country has a rich cultural heritage
which attracts tourists, in particular to
cities such as St Petersburg and Moscow.
Events include a festival of classical music
held in April in St Petersburg and The Russian
Winter Festival celebrated during December
and January.
Geography: Russia stretches from Europe,
through Asia to the Pacific Ocean. The land
ranges from vast forests and broad plains
to mountains and Arctic tundra.
Weather: Summers are
warm in the south and cool in the north.
Winters are cool in the south and very cold
in the north.
Getting There: Most visitors to Russia must have a visa to enter
the country. There are flights available from
the main European airports to Moscow and St. Petersburg.
There are train services between many Eastern
and Central European cities and the Russian capital.
Travelling by car into Russia is often difficult
and the distances involved are considerable.
