The states comprising
Germany were, until recent centuries, separate
monarchies, each with their own character
and culture. Following two destructive World
wars the country has developed into a modern
democracy. It has a number of busy cities
such as Berlin, which since reunification
in 1990 has again become the capital. Tourist
attractions include the large forests, castles
and picturesque towns. Cultural activities
and Winter sports are popular, as are events
such as Munich's Oktoberfest.
Geography: Germany ranges from the Bavarian
Alps in the south to lowlands in the north.
It is located south of Denmark, east of
the Netherlands and west of Poland.
Getting
There: Good road and rail links exist with the
countries neighbouring Germany. Regular flights
are available to airports in cities such as Berlin,
Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Hamburg. Ferry services
run between the German coast and ports in Britain
and Scandinavia.
