Since emerging from
Russian domination during the 1990s, Estonia
has developed into a modern market economy
and joined the European Union in 2004. The
country is at its best for visitors during
the Spring and Summer months, as the Autumns
are very damp and the Winters are very cold.
However Winter sports such as skiing, skating
and ice fishing are popular. Estonian folklore
has survived in songs dating back to the
first millennium BC. During the Summer many
events take place and Estonians often take
a weeks holiday around Jaanipaev, the eve
of which is June 23rd, and during which
people sing and dance around bonfires in
the countryside.
