Whether travelling for
business or pleasure, what you chose to pack
is an important consideration. The aim of packing
light is to be able to live indefinitely using
the items carried in one bag, which can be carried
with you on planes, trains and buses. The advantages
of travelling light include the freedom to move
more quickly and easily than you would if loaded
down by several heavy bags and the reduced risk
of your luggage being lost or stolen as it might
be if you have to check it into cargo bays.
Each page of this section contains a list of
suggested things to pack into your bag. |
A number of factors should
be taken into account when choosing a suitable
bag. Your bag and its contents should not exceed
the size and weight limits allowed by airlines
as carry on luggage. It should be sturdy enough
to withstand the rough treatment it is likely
to encounter, made of a weather proof material
such as ballistic nylon, have fittings strong
enough to hold a shoulder strap and lockable
zips. If your bag has several compartments,
it will be easier to organize your things and
access them when required. A small detachable
bag could be used to carry items such as a water
bottle, map, camera and packed lunch during
days out. A lightweight nylon bag, which weighs
a few ounces and can fold into a small space,
could be used as a laundry bag and to carry
any souvenirs or gifts that you purchase during
your travels. Avoid bags with wheels as they
are of little use in areas with rough ground
and add to the weight of a bag. Also remember
that too many stickers and tags on a bag might
attract the interest of thieves. |
You could adapt the packing
suggestions in this section to suit your own
requirements. Test how comfortable you will
be carrying your luggage during your travels
by having a trial run. Put on the clothes and
shoes you will be wearing, and go for a walk
around your local town carrying the bag, packed
with the things you plan to take. |
