Clothes

The clothes in this list include those you are wearing. Choose colours which compliment each other and fabrics that are lightweight, wear well and dry quickly, as travelling light means washing your clothes, either at a launderette or by hand. Use layering of thin fabrics to cope with both hot and cold weather. To reduce the wrinkling of your clothing, pack so that larger items are on the outer layers and smaller, less wrinkle prone, items in the middle.

Belt
It should fit all of your trousers and canvas is better than leather, which can become mouldy when wet.

Cap
A foldable cap offers protection from the sun and a woolen hat will help to keep you warm.

Coat
Should be easy to pack, whilst suiting the expected weather conditions in the areas that you plan to visit.

Formal jacket
Some nightclubs and social events require a more formal appearance. Chose a jacket that is easy care and has sufficient pockets.

Formal shoes - 1 pair
Walk around in them long enough to wear them in before setting off on your travels.

Gloves
Avoid heavy bulky gloves and choose something waterproof with a warm lining.

Jumper
It could be used in place of a jacket to keep you warm.

Rain wear
A lightweight rain jacket can keep you dry and a strong plastic bag, of sufficient size, will help to keep your luggage dry.

Sandals
A good pair of sandals will protect your feet from hot sand and help to prevent foot infections in public areas such as hostel showers.

Shirts - 5
Light, loose fitting long-sleeved shirts can keep you cooler than T-shirts and offer more protection from the hot sun.

Socks - 5 pairs
Cotton socks dry slowly and absorb moisture, which can result in blisters and infections whilst synthetic fabrics keep feet dry.

Swim wear
For a man, a good choice would be large loose fitting trunks which can also be worn as shorts. For a woman, a one-piece swim suit could also be used as a body suit.

Tie or scarf
Accessories can make a wardrobe more flexible. A tie might be needed for formal occasions and a woolen scarf will keep you warm.

Trousers - 2 pairs
Jeans are heavy, bulky and take a long time to dry.

Underwear - 5 pairs
Choose light, loose fitting underwear. Avoid nylon, which doesn't breathe and can result in infections in hot weather.

Walking shoes - 1 pair
Ensure that you wear them in before you set off on your travel. You could also take spare laces.
