The capital of Croatia,
Zagreb is located on Medvednica Mountain on the banks
of the Sava River. The historic attractions of Zagreb
include Veternica Cave which dates from the Palaeolithic
period, Roman ruins and the medieval Old Town, which
can be found at heart of the city. Other places of
interest include the Croatian National Theatre, Trakoscan
Castle and the Croatian History Museum. There are
also fashionable shops and restaurants and the city
is a popular venue for international conferences.
Many of the tourist sites in Zagreb are located within
the city center and within walking distance of each
other. The public transport network includes trams,
buses and trains. Tram tickets can be bought at newspaper
kiosks and some of the routes continue to operate
during the night. Buses are inexpensive and are particularly
useful for travelling to and from the city center
and the airport. Taxis are usually easy to find in
the city, especially at airports and hotels.
