Helsinki Travel Guide

The capital of Finland, Helsinki is an elegant city of parks and wide roads, lined with architecture ranging from Gothic to contemporary. The natural and urban blend together and the parks are home to a variety of plant and animal life, such as pheasants, squirrels and sometimes elk. Fresh unpolluted air blows in from the Baltic sea and whilst during the long dark Winter days a blanket of snow covers the city, there is near continuous daylight during the Summer when the melting snow reveals the greenery of the parks

Outdoor activities such as skiing, skating and sailing are popular in the city as are sporting events such as the Helsinki City Marathon. Tourist attractions include the National Museum of Finland, Market Square and Uspenski Cathedral. Cultural events range from performances by the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, theatres, rock concerts and film festivals. Locals and visitors to the city enjoy socializing in the bars and clubs and although for much of the year the city is cold and wintry, during the brief Summer the weather can be warm enough to sunbathe.

Public transport in Helsinki is efficient and includes buses, trams, a metro and ferries. Tickets can be bought from ticket machines or drivers and tourist tickets valid for one, three or five days are available and can be used during that time for unlimited use across the network. However the city is small enough to explore on foot and the many cycle routes make bicycles a good way to travel. Driving in the city is a viable option, whether using your own vehicle or a hire car, and Taxis are widely available.
