Bern Travel Guide

 

The capital of Switzerland, Bern is one of the oldest cities in Europe and its historic heart is a Unesco World Heritage Site. The old city has preserved its medieval character, with cobbled streets, old buildings, towers, ornate fountains and a large astronomical clock. Parts of the city also reflect the influence of modern architecture and its picturesque charm, relaxed friendly atmosphere and farmers markets belie its importance as the countries capital and location of the Swiss government.

Along arcades and on its streets and squares are covered shopping areas, cafes and restaurants. Attractions include museums such as the Kunstmuseum, theatres, botanical gardens and the Albert Einstein House. There is a rich cultural life including classical and modern music and performing arts. The River Aare is popular as a place to enjoy pleasant walks and outdoor activities.

The location of Bern makes it a good base from which to visit the nearby lakes and mountains. Excellent transport links, make the city easy to reach from other European centers and from which to arrange trips to places such as Lake Geneva and Lucerne.
