The Netherlands
capital of Amsterdam has a hedonistic reputation,
but its attractions also include fine buildings and
museums. Canals run around the oldest parts of the
city and can be travelled along on canal-boats or
crossed using the many old bridges.
The Royal Palace is on Dam Square, from where run
the main shopping streets. Nearby are the busy Rembrandtplein
and Leidseplein quarters, where theatres, bars and
nightclubs are popular with both locals and tourists.
Cultural attractions include the Stedelijk Museum
of Modern Art and the Amsterdam Historisch Museum.
Also worth visiting during your stay in Amsterdam
are Rembrandt House and Anne Frank House.
Taxis are expensive and if you are driving, either
using your own car or a rental car, it is better to
park outside of the city and use the excellent public
transport system. A network of buses, trams and the
metro spread out from Centraal Station, where you
can find maps and purchase tickets. Night buses go
to most parts of the city after midnight. However
the streets and lanes of the center of Amsterdam are
best explored on foot or using a bicycle, which can
be rented on a daily or weekly basis. You should ensure
that the bike is securely locked if it is left unattended.
