Europe is bordered to the east by the Ural Mountains, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, to the north by the Arctic Ocean and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. It has an area of more than 4 million square miles and a population of 800 million. Physically Europe could be considered to form the western peninsula of Eurasia and the classification as a continent is more cultural and political than geographical. Most of the countries are members of the council of Europe and a growing number either have, or are negotiating for, membership of the European Union.
